Dislocation Plasticity: Overview
نویسنده
چکیده
An arbitrary deformation of a material can always be described as the sum of a change in volume and a change in shape at constant volume (shear). Assuming constant structure, the change in volume is recovered when the load is removed, since the atoms can simply relax back to their equilibrium sizes. The change in shape, on the other hand, may or may not be recovered, since the atoms can relax into new positions that are configurationally identical to the original ones, but displaced from them. The part of the shear that is recovered is elastic, the part that remains is plastic. Plastic deformation is a permanent change in shape through shear.

متن کاملA dynamic discrete dislocation plasticity method for the simulation of plastic relaxation under shock loading
In this article, it is demonstrated that current methods of modelling plasticity as the collective motion of discrete dislocations, such as two-dimensional discrete dislocation plasticity (DDP), are unsuitable for the simulation of very high strain rate processes (106 s−1 or more) such as plastic relaxation during shock loading. Current DDP models treat dislocations quasi-statically, ignoring t...
متن کاملMicromechanical modelling of nanocrystalline and ultrafine grained metals: A short overview
An overview of micromechanical models of strength and deformation behaviour of nanostructured and ultrafine grained metallic materials is presented. Composite models of nanomaterials, polycrystal plasticity based models, grain boundary sliding, the effect of nonequilibrium grain boundaries and nanoscale properties are discussed and compared. The examples of incorporation of peculiar nanocrystal...
متن کاملMesoscale model of plasticity
A framework for investigating plasticity phenomena and their dependence on the underlying physical and size-dependent mechanisms is developed. The framework is based on crystal plasticity and three-dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics analyses. Particularly, the mesoscale model couples continuum crystal plasticity framework with a set of spatio-temporal evolution equations for dislocation ...
متن کاملPlastic Flow in a Composite: A Comparison of Nonlocal Continuum and Discrete Dislocation Predictions
A two-dimensional model composite with elastic reinforcements in a crystalline matrix subject to macroscopic shear is considered using both discrete dislocation plasticity and a nonlocal continuum crystal plasticity theory. Only single slip is permitted in the matrix material. The discrete dislocation results are used as numerical experiments and we explore the extent to which the nonlocal crys...
